Skin Mount:
If you would like a skin mount, DO NOT GUT THE FISH! Pick a "show side", (the side of the fish you would like to have showing when it is hanging on your wall). Look at both sides of your fish. Determine which side of your fish has the fewest missing scales, scars or inperfections, this will be your "show side". Take a few pictures of your fish to be used as a reference for color and details. It is helpful if the pictures are taken in plenty of light, without any shadows.
Treat your new trophy carefully, try not to disturb scales, damage fins, or let the skin dry out. If you have ice available put the fish in a plastic bag and put it on ice show side up as soon as possisble.
If you can not take your mount to a taxidermist immediately you will need to freeze it. While your fish is wet, cover the entire surface with 'Borax'. Make sure you get 'Borax' in all of the cracks and crevices. Place the fish in a plastic bag and place it on a flat surface in your freezer. Do not place anything on top of the fish even after is is frozen. Keep your trophy frozen, a taxidermist will thaw it out prior to working on it.
Replica Mount:
Take plenty of pictures, from all angles and in plenty of light to show detail and color; with a few close ups, especially of the face.
For a replica mount, you will need to measure the total length and girth of your trophy fish. The total length is the maximum length of the fish, from the tip of the snout to the tip of the tail with the tail fin pinched together. "Girth" is best measured with a flexible or cloth tape. Measure the circumference of the fish at it's widest point. For many fish species this measurment will be taken at the leading edge of the dorsal fin.
